Comment of the artist/ Painting
* The whole composition of casket cover I decide to do around summer theme: it’s a girl, summer -reminiscent, she is solar, sweet, radiant, flowering, surrounded by wilderness of flowers and loved by all peoples, as the summer time. First of all I had to fulfill a lid body by bleach. Next, I settle down to the disclosure of tone and colors. I chose tones allied to summer: tones of green, red, yellow, white and blue. And, as always, you have to draw softly, so bright colors do not break through the black background. Then I start painting, ornamenting the lid by dark tone, pick in all paths and details, the shadows and bright part of composition. At the final stage of coloration, I start to show the volume of image by using gaps. Then, I finished coloring, lacquer and dry out the lid.
The main part of Palekha technology - is ability to generalize, and own the technique of drawing by spaces. Drawing by spaces - is multilayer drawing, when bottom layers viewable from under translucent coating of the upper layers. It’s represent the volume and giving vivacity to the image.
I finished work on casket by painting in strokes of leaf-gold and artificial silver. By using liquid leaf-gold I led all details; the gold produces the splashes of light on girls hairs, flowers and leaves. I have drawn carefully the ornament of thumbnails and the side walls of casket. After gold topping, I polish it by wolf tooth, so gold would shimmer better and then I varnish all finally.
For the Palekh miniature painting by gold - is the crucial element of technology. Since ancient times gold represent sunlight and bright sides of life. In combination with black subject within the painting of the casket, it creates relative space and immensity. This is the key-note of Palekh art.
